ANS in pencil, signed “T.A.E.,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, December 8, 11. Handwritten note at the head of a letter sent to him by his son, Walter, in full: "Say that I am not going to buy any more real estate, if you want me to fund you a house to rent in Salisbury I will do so."
William writes, in part: "We are compelled to leave out present house and as there is no other place for rent in the whole town or county—we are somewhat up mud creek without a paddle. It looks as though we would have to leave Salisbury—a step that I would sincerely regret as I like the people here and we have loads of friends. Of course there is the 'shack' where we lived in the summer but it is in such bad repair that in the condition it is, it is hardly fit for [expletive]. I believe that the shack and two acres could be purchased for six hundred dollars and a new roof and another room could be added on for a like amount. Then with a little work such as plastering, papering, etc. we would have a comfortable home, a place where we are satisfied to live. Such a place would rent for fifteen dollars per month and if you will purchase this property and fix it up, we would pay you this amount. In five years the place would be worth double as several people in town would purchase lots and build near us, and of course this would start the ball rolling and more would come and property go up…
If the proposition submitted is pulled off—I am going into the oil business here and will put up a small station right on the property. I have the promise of several dozen motor boat owners to purchase oils and supplies from me and can naturally add to my income. Think this matter over as it means just two things—settled for good or just as bad off and unsettled as ever." In fine condition.
William Leslie Edison (1878–1937) had a strained relationship with his father, and they were often at odds over finances; Edison once said of such a request for help: 'I see no reason whatever why I should support my son. He has done me no honor and has brought the blush of shame to my cheeks many times.' William served in both the Spanish-American War and World War I, and later turned to chicken farming to support himself.
