Description

"The town without a name"—Churchill's chief scientific adviser thanks the commander of Los Alamos for hosting his secret 1944 visit

British physicist (1886-1957) and Winston Churchill’s chief scientific adviser during World War II. He contributed to radar and infrared guidance research, advocated strategic bombing policy, and later played a key role in establishing Britain’s Atomic Energy Authority. World War II-dated TLS signed “Yours very sincerely, Cherwell,” one page, 6 x 9, United Kingdom Treasury Delegation letterhead, October 21, 1944. Letter to Lt. Col. Whitney Ashbridge, the former military commander of the Army Post at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, in full: “Before I leave Washington I should like once more to thank you and Mrs. Ashbridge for your great kindness to me in the town without a name. I shall always remember my dinner at your house with the extraordinarily interesting Indian dance afterwards, and also our wonderful drive down to Albuquerque. Not least I must thank you for ensuring that I obtained such comfortable accommodation, and food to fit my fads. I should be grateful if you would convey my thanks to those more immediately concerned, and remain once more with my warmest thanks and regards to your wife and yourself.” Lindemann adds the salutation and the word “Albuquerque” in his own hand. In fine condition.
