Description

The leader of Popski's Private Army inscribes his memoir to the woman who typed it

British Army officer (1897–1951) who founded and commanded No. 1 Demolition Squadron, PPA, colloquially known as ‘Popski's Private Army,’ one of several special forces raiding units formed in the Western Desert during the Second World War. Signed book: Private Army. First edition. London: Jonathan Cape, 1950. Hardcover with dust jacket, 5.75 x 8.25, 512 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in ink, “For Menina, who has done much more work on this book than I have, very gratefully, Popski, London, 13th February 1950.” Collector's notation to the signed page notes that the recipient was Mrs. Menina Russell-King (1921-2014), who typed the book's manuscript and who was the secretary to publisher Jonathan Cape. In very good to fine condition, with soiling to the dust jacket, and sunning to the jacket's spine.
