Description

French writer (1866–1944) who won the 1915 Nobel Prize for Literature. ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, December 4, 1921. Handwritten letter to Madame Laura Talmage Huyck. In part (translated): "It is heartening to me to feel that my Clérambault has found its way into other souls. Moreover, I was convinced… that it would awaken echoes in certain souls in America: for I knew the purity of religious light that is a moral elite (and especially a feminine one) in Anglo-Saxon culture.—Here [in France], unfortunately, religion is too often confused with the rites of an official cult, and is not the deep and spontaneous surge of a free soul. I thank you for the kindness you showed in writing to me. I hope that, through new works, I will be able to complete the ‘message’ of Clérambault." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Rolland's own hand. Rolland’s 1920 book Clérambault is a pacifist novel about a French intellectual disillusioned by nationalist propaganda during World War I.
