Signed book: Dracula by Bram Stoker. First photoplay edition. NY: Grosset & Dunlap, [1931]. Hardcover bound in red cloth with dust jacket, 5.25 x 7.75, 354 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in green fountain pen, "To Dick Sheffield, my friend, sincerely, Bela Lugosi." The consignor notes that the signature was obtained on the set of the 1956 film The Black Sleep, which marked Lugosi's last complete role before his death in August 1956. Autographic condition: very good to fine, with two old tape stains. Book condition: G-/G, with partial cracks to joints and hinges, scuffing to cloth, edgewear, and sunning and a small area of loss to the bottom of the jacket's spine. Accompanied by a vintage glossy photo of Lugosi flanked by teenage Dick Sheffield and a companion from that day of their movie set visit.
The recipient, Dick Sheffield, first met Lugosi as a Los Angeles teenager in 1953, the same year he founded the Bela Lugosi Fan Club. Captivated by Lugosi’s enduring charisma, Sheffield became his devoted companion during the final three years of the actor’s life, witnessing his personal struggles and final screen work in Plan 9 from Outer Space. Sheffield was the last person to see Lugosi alive and later served as a pallbearer at his funeral in August 1956. Sheffield championed the legacy and career of Lugosi and other heroes of classic horror for the remainder of his life.
