Description

British mathematical physicist and engineer (1824–1907) who served as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, making major contributions to the mathematical analysis of electricity, the formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and the unification of modern physics. He received the Royal Society’s Copley Medal in 1883, served as its President from 1890 to 1895, and in 1892 became the first British scientist elevated to the House of Lords. LS signed “Kelvin,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, 28 Chester Square, S.W. letterhead, July 28, 1896. Letter to W. T. Farquhar, in part: “The memorial will be largely signed by Scottish members of Parliament and it may possibly be judged advisable not to go further at present in support of it. It is possible however that a copy may be sent to you for your signature. I am glad to think that as an old pupil you are anxious to promote the application for assistance to his daughters.” In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
