Description

Civil and mechanical engineer (1781–1848) who built the first public rail line using steam locomotives. LS signed “Geo. Stephenson,” one page, 5 x 7.75, February 1847. Letter to the “Clerk of the County Court of Brompton,” in full: “I authorize you to pay to Mess’rs Buchan & Carter any sums they may have occasion to receive through your Court of the Firm of Geo. Stephenson and Company.” In very good to fine condition, with minor edge chipping, and two light tape stains in the upper blank area.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
