American theoretical physicist (1918-1988) whose work in quantum electrodynamics earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965; he is often credited for introducing the concept of nanotechnology. TLS signed “R. P. Feynman,” one page, 6 x 8.5, California Institute of Technology [Norman Bridge Laboratory of Physics] letterhead, January 14, 1959. Letter to Gerard M. Wolten, chairman of the Colloquium Committee at Atomics International, a division of the North American Aviation company that engaged principally in the early development of nuclear technology and nuclear reactors for both commercial and government applications. In full: “Thank you very much for your invitation to speak at one of your colloquiums during the coming year. I regret that it is necessary to decline your offer but my commitments are such that I have no time available.” In fine condition, with a light paperclip impression, and two file holes.
This letter dates to the year that Feynman delivered his famous ‘There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom: An Invitation to Enter a New Field of Physics’ lecture that was given at the annual American Physical Society meeting at Caltech on December 29, 1959. Feynman introduced the idea that scientists could deliberately manipulate and control matter at the atomic and molecular scale—long before the technology to do so existed. He described concepts like atom-by-atom fabrication, ultra-dense information storage, and microscopic machines, effectively laying the intellectual foundation for nanotechnology. By framing these ideas as practical engineering challenges rather than science fiction, he inspired generations of researchers and helped define an entirely new field of physics and engineering that would emerge decades later.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
