Famed American naturalist (1837–1921) best known for his writings on nature and travel. ALS, one page, 5 x 8, December 14. Addressed from Harvard’s Irving House in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a handwritten letter to noted ornithologist Bradford Torrey, in full: “Here is the little poem I spoke to you about. The price is ¢25. If the Companion does not take it please let me have it back. I read your paper in the Transcript with much pleasure (the 12th).” In fine condition, with some slightly irregular faint toning. Accompanied by a vintage matte-finish 3 x 4 photo of Burroughs at his Slabsides cabin in West Park, New York, affixed to a larger backing sheet. Bradford Torrey (1843–1912) was an American ornithologist who also served as assistant editor of the Youth's Companion, a Boston-based children's magazine that existed for over one hundred years until it finally merged with The American Boy in 1929.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
