Description

British polymath (1773-1829) who made notable contributions to the fields of vision, light, solid mechanics, energy, physiology, language, musical harmony, and Egyptology. He was instrumental in the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, specifically the Rosetta Stone. Rare ink signature, “Thomas Young,” on an off-white 6.75 x 1.5 sheet clipped from a handwritten letter from Young to one of his brothers. The front side reads, in part: “…off in great measure from the humor of her…although I am sure we entertain a mutual…and respect for each other, it is unfortunately [impossible] in the nature of things that we can divine…” The reverse signed side: “With kind love to my Father & Mother & to my brothers & sisters, I am, your affectionate brother, Thomas Young.” In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
