Partly-printed DS in French, signed “M. Curie,” one page, 8.25 x 12.25, January 12, 1922. Completed certificate (No. 1861) from Curie's laboratory at the Institut du Radium, documenting the testing of a sample of radium by Y-ray radiation. The sample was analyzed for the emission of radium gamma radiation (“dosage du radium par le rayonnement γ”). The certificate documents the nature of the source as a solid radium salt apparatus and specifies the measurement conditions under which its gamma radiation was compared with the laboratory radium standard after the source had reached limiting (equilibrium) radiation. The resulting measurements indicate that the external gamma emission corresponds to 3.13 mg of elemental radium. After correction for absorption of radiation by the walls of the apparatus—estimated at 6% based on wall thickness and absorption coefficient—the quantity of radium contained in the apparatus was determined to be 3.13 mg of radium element, equivalent to 5.84 mg of hydrated radium bromide. The report states that the precision of the measurements is such that the error cannot exceed 1%, rendering the determination scientifically conclusive.
