English inventor (1743-1823) who designed the first power loom in 1784, and continued to improve upon it for the next twenty years; he also invented wool-combing and rope-making machines. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 9, February 12, 1821. Addressed from “Hollanden House, near Tonbridge Kent,” a handwritten letter from Edmund Cartwright to an unidentified recipient, in full: “I lately received a package of seeds from the Cape of Good Hope, which I afterwards transfer’d to the Duke of Bedford, requesting his Grace would permit his Gardener to make a selection of a few of the more hardy roots for my own use. His Grace, with his usual liberalities, has sent me specimens, I should suppose, of the whole. As your attention is not limited to my particular department of science, botany, I presume, has its share. Should that be the case, if you will mark anything that is worth your acceptance in the enclosed list, I will take an early opportunity of sending it to you.” In fine condition.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
