Teacher and humanitarian (1821–1912) best known for founding the relief organization the American Red Cross. ALS signed “C. B.,” one page, 5.25 x 6.5, no date. Handwritten letter from Glen Echo, in part: "The Doctor spoke with me about the phone, before telegraphing you and it seemed to us that the opportunity was too good to be lost—if it proved to be at all successful. We felt the full force of your reasoning. The cost is certainly an objection, and one which I should feel as deeply as anyone all things considered…I write now to say if you feel that you cannot spare it, and think it would be better expended in your work there, you can still decline."
