Description

Heisenberg authors the obituary of Max Born—his mentor, colleague, and fellow father of quantum mechanics

German theoretical physicist (1901-1976) awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in physics for the creation of quantum mechanics. TLS in German, signed “W. Heisenberg,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, Max Planck Institute letterhead, February 12, 1970. Letter to Professor Albert Theile, in full (translated): "I am completely satisfied with the translation of my obituary for Max Born into Spanish. However, I would like to request that you use the enclosed text, as the version in the FAZ contains a significant typographical error. I agree to the terms of your letter." In fine condition.

Max Born was Heisenberg’s mentor at the University of Göttingen in the early 1920s, where their close collaboration led directly to the formulation of matrix mechanics, the first complete mathematical framework of quantum mechanics. Born immediately recognized the significance of Heisenberg’s breakthrough work and provided its rigorous statistical interpretation, introducing the probabilistic understanding of the wave function that became central to quantum theory. Their intellectual bond endured well beyond their formal collaboration, marked by deep mutual respect and lifelong correspondence. Heisenberg’s authorship of Born’s obituary is thus a particularly personal and historically resonant testament to their shared legacy.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
