German naturalist and explorer (1769-1859) who wrote Kosmos, a massive five-volume study that attempted to unify the various branches of man's knowledge. ALS in French, signed “Aexandre Humboldt,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, no date. Handwritten letter to James Swain of Philadelphia, in part (translated): "Even though I have been a little sick for a few days, I would be pleased to receive Mr. James Swain of Philadelphia the day after tomorrow on Thursday, the 22nd of this month, at 1 o'clock, if this day suits him." Addressed on the integral leaf in Humboldt's hand, adding his name, "B'n Humboldt," on the address panel. In very good to fine condition, with toning and light chipping to the edges.
