Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist (1833–1896) known for inventing dynamite and for bequeathing his fortune for the establishment of the Nobel Prize. ALS in French, signed “A. Nobel,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, January 2, 1884. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in full (translated): "For each letter you get, I receive at least two hundred, and in different languages. That is why I cannot answer as promptly as I would like to the personal letters I receive. I was very pleased to receive your two nice little letters. I can see that they have you doing a tough job, but it will be good for your health, which is very important not only in itself but as a prerequisite for all joy and satisfaction. One of my Glasgow friends, a very rich man, sent one of his sons to America to do basically the same job you do and endue the same fatigues and privations as you do. It is hard for now but good for the future. We have just begun a new year and I use this occasion to wish you all that youth can desire and the will to make it come true. Work hard and do not forget, in your leisure time, to read poetry, the inner source that can so easily fill lonely hours and bring consolation." In fine condition.
