Renowned polar explorer (1874-1922) who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. LS signed “E. H. Shackleton,” one page, 4.25 x 6.75, April 27, 1920. Letter to the Bavis Company of Basingstroke, who supplied Shackleton's Antarctic expeditions with footwear. In full: "Replying to your enquiry I am pleased to state that the Bavis Uppers and Driped Soles gave particular satisfaction. There was no complaint at any time. Should these findings, after such severe conditions, be of any service to you, you are quite at liberty to use them in any way you may desire." In fine condition, with mounting remnants to reverse.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
