Commemorative cover with a cachet honoring "The New King of Chess," showing cartoon images of a miniature Boris Spassky holding the royal robe of a kingly Bobby Fischer, with text below reading, "World Chess Championship Match in Reykjavik, Iceland 1972," postmarked in Reykjavik on September 3, 1972, signed in blue ballpoint by Bobby Fischer. In very fine condition.
After a dominant run through the qualification matches—sweeping Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen 6–0 and defeating former champion Tigran Petrosian—American grandmaster Bobby Fischer challenged reigning world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in the 1972 World Chess Championship. Played at Laugardalshöll in Reykjavík, Iceland, the match was widely dubbed the “Match of the Century” and drew unprecedented global attention as a symbolic Cold War showdown between the United States and the USSR. Fischer’s victory made him the first U.S.-born world chess champion and briefly ended 24 years of Soviet dominance of the title.
