Description

Commemorative ‘air mail’ cover with a stamped cachet related to Amelia Earhart’s arrival at the New York State Fair on ‘Syracuse Day,’ August 27, 1928, signed neatly in black ink by Earhart. In fine condition.

The opening day of the 1928 New York State Fair featured a visit by the most famous American woman of her day, Amelia Earhart, just a couple of months after being the first woman to make a transatlantic flight. Though she didn’t pilot the plane from Newfoundland to South Wales, she famously joked she ‘was just baggage, like a sack of potatoes,’ and returned home an instant celebrity.

She quickly launched into a grueling publicity tour to promote aviation, and her heavily advertised appearance at the Fair was part of it. Ironically, getting to Syracuse proved more harrowing than crossing the ocean. Crowds—estimated anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000—packed the fairgrounds on Aug. 27th, boosted by a civic half-day holiday, but Earhart’s plane failed to arrive on time.

Dense fog blanketed the Hudson River that morning. Flying above 150 feet was impossible, and at times the plane flew just above the water. Earhart later remarked, ‘The fog up the Hudson reminded me more of Burry Point, Wales where we ended our trans-Atlantic flight than anything I have since seen.’ While others aboard were close to panic, Earhart remained unfazed. ‘The trip from New York to me was very enjoyable,’ she said. ‘I don't doubt that it gave all of us cause for worry but we came through all right and now I am very glad to be at the state fair.’
