Description

"If I Didn't Love You"—Hank Williams and Fred Rose sell a country song

DS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 11, November 3, 1947. Publishing agreement between Milene Music and Hank Williams & Fred Rose, in which the songwriters assign the copyright of the "heretofore unpublished original musical composition…now entitled 'If I Didn't Love You'" for the sum of $1 plus royalties. Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Hank Williams and Fred Rose, and countersigned by Eleanor Shea and Wesley Rose as witnesses. In fine condition.

Hank Williams and Fred Rose formed one of the most influential songwriting partnerships in the history of country music, blending Williams’s stark emotional honesty with Rose’s musical discipline and publishing expertise. Beginning in the mid-1940s, Rose helped refine Williams’s compositions, guiding his output and ensuring his songs reached a wide audience through effective publishing and recording strategies. Together, they created a body of work that defined the honky-tonk era and produced some of the most enduring songs in American popular music. Williams and Rose were two of the first three inductees of the Country Music Hall of Fame when it opened in 1961.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
