Description

"After Detroit I go to Pine Ridge Agency, So. Dak. to take moving pictures of the last battles and surrender of hostile Indians"

ALS signed “Will,” one page, 8.25 x 11, ornately illustrated Buffalo Bill & Sells-Floto Circus letterhead, August 27, 1914. Handwritten letter to his cousin, Frank Cody, in part: "If you can't come to Detroit Dep. 1st & 2nd send me an introduction to your mining man there…P.S. After Detroit I go to Pine Ridge Agency, So. Dak. to take moving pictures of the last battles and surrender of hostile Indians." In fine condition.

Written on ornate Buffalo Bill & Sells-Floto Circus letterhead, this letter dates from the final years of Cody’s career, when he was still actively touring and managing engagements while expanding into early motion-picture projects. Its reference to filming at Pine Ridge underscores Cody’s role in shaping—and commercializing—the popular memory of the Indian Wars at a moment when both the frontier era and Cody himself were nearing their end. He took part in the production of two films in 1914, released under the titles 'The Adventures of Buffalo Bill' and 'Indian Wars.'
