Description

The 11-year-old King Louis XV looks forward to marriage: "It is an increase to the joy I feel at the agreement of my marriage with the Infanta of Spain"

LS in French, signed “Louis,” one page both sides, 6.5 x 8.5, November 12, 1721. Letter to the Elector of Bavaria, Maximilian Emanuel, in part (translated): "It is an increase to the joy I feel at the agreement of my marriage with the Infanta of Spain, to think that you will share it with me, of which I am entirely convinced, knowing your sentiments towards me. In this conviction, I have particular pleasure in informing you of this event, and at the same time of the imminent conclusion of the marriage of the Prince of Asturias with my aunt Princess of Montpensier, daughter of the Duke of Orléans, my uncle." The integral address leaf carries two affixed red wax seals with blue silk ribbons. In fine condition, with scattered light stains.

These marriages with two children of King Philip V of Spain were intended to strengthen the Franco-Spanish alliance. Louise-Élisabeth d'Orléans, Mademoiselle de Montpensier (1709-1742), daughter of the Regent, did indeed marry the Prince of Asturias in January 1722, who reigned for only a few months under the name of Louis I (1707-1724). As for the marriage of the young eleven-year-old Louis XV with the Infanta Mariana Victoria (1718-1781), barely three years old, it did not materialize: the Infanta-Queen was sent back from Versailles in 1725, and the contract was annulled; Louis XV then married Marie Leszczynska, and the Infanta married King Joseph I of Portugal in 1729.
