President Hayes authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “an envelope containing my reply to a letter of the King of Spain announcing the decease of His sister in law and cousin, Her Royal Highness, the Infanta Doña Maria Cristina de Orleans y Borbon." Signed neatly at the conclusion in ink by President Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition.
María Cristina de Orléans (1852–1879), the daughter of Prince Antoine, Duke of Montpensier, and Infanta Luisa Fernanda of Spain, died of tuberculosis on April 28, 1879, at the age of 26.
