Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, January 17, 1873. President Grant authorizes and directs "the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to an Envelope addressed to His Majesty Oscar II, King of Sweden & Norway, condolence on death of Charles XV & congratulating on occasion of Oscar II, to the thrones of the two Kingdoms." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Ulysses S. Grant. In fine condition.
The death of Charles XV in September 1872 marked the end of a popular but politically constrained reign in Sweden and Norway, where he had ruled as Charles XV of Sweden and Charles IV of Norway. With no surviving legitimate son, the thrones passed to his younger brother, Oscar II, who was crowned king of Sweden and Norway and would become the last monarch to rule the united kingdoms before Norway’s independence in 1905. Grant’s message of condolence and congratulation thus acknowledged both a moment of dynastic mourning and the peaceful succession of a new Scandinavian sovereign.
