Description

Edison receives his Congressional Gold Medal: "The presentation ceremonies were very impressive"

TLS signed “Thos. A. Edison,” one page, 8 x 10, From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison letterhead, October 27, 1928. Letter to Congressman Randolph Perkins of New Jersey, in full: "The introduction by you in the House of Representatives of a Bill to award a gold medal to me culminated last Saturday night in the presentation of the medal which was subsequently conferred by Congress. The presentation ceremonies were very impressive, and I am greatly appreciative of the honor thus conferred on me. I cannot let this occasion pass without expressing to you the deep gratification I feel in your advocacy of the measure through which I have been awarded such a distinguished mark of approbation." Affixed to a same-size mount and in very good to fine condition, with lightly trimmed edges, and slightly irregular overall toning.

On May 28, 1928, the House of Representatives approved H.J. Res. 243 to award Thomas A. Edison a Congressional Gold Medal. The bill, introduced by Randolph Perkins and supported by Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon, highlighted Edison’s many international honors and the lack of comparable U.S. recognition. It passed with little opposition, though Representative Fiorello La Guardia successfully removed a provision allowing the sale of replica medals. President Calvin Coolidge signed the measure on May 29, 1928. Edison received the medal on October 20, 1928, at his West Orange, New Jersey laboratory, with Coolidge speaking via a radio link from the White House.
