Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 6, 1872. President Grant authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to "my full power to Hamilton Fish, Secretary of State, to exchange the ratifications of the Convention with Mexico, signed on the 19th of April 1871." Nicely signed at the conclusion in purple ink by President Ulysses S. Grant. In fine condition.

This 1871 U.S.–Mexico convention simply extended the deadline of a joint claims commission originally established in 1868 to resolve disputes and financial claims arising after the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican–American War. Because the commission had not finished its work within the original timeframe, both governments agreed to give it up to one additional year without reopening the submission of new claims. In a broader historical context, the treaty reflects the long aftermath of the war and the ongoing effort by both nations to stabilize diplomatic relations and settle cross-border grievances.
