Description

Edison electrifies America—an 1884 annual report of the Edison Company for Isolated Lighting

Manuscript DS, signed “Thos. A. Edison,” one page both sides, 8 x 12.5, January 1, 1884. Document headed, "Annual Report of the Edison Company for Isolated Lighting," in part: "The amount of the Capital Stock of the Company is $1,000,000. The amount of the Capital stock actually paid in is $735,253.66, of which amount $382,500 has been issued in payment for property necessary for the business of the Company, purchased by the Trustees. The remaining $352,753.66 has been paid in cash. The indebtedness of the Company is $98,009.72." Signed twice at the conclusion in ink by Sherburne B. Eaton, president of the company, and by four trustees: Charles Henry Coster, Thomas A. Edison, Edward H. Johnson, and one other. Also signed on the reverse by Joseph Hutchinson as the company's secretary, and countersigned by a notary. In very good to fine condition, with splitting to the ends of the folds.

This document dates to a pivotal moment in the expansion of Thomas Edison’s electrical empire, when centralized power stations were still in their infancy and smaller, self-contained “isolated lighting” systems were a key part of electrification. Formed to supply electric light to factories, hotels, and estates beyond the reach of urban grids, the Edison Company for Isolated Lighting reflects the transitional phase between experimental invention and scalable infrastructure.

By 1884—just two years after the opening of the Pearl Street Station in New York—Edison and his associates were aggressively commercializing electric light, refining both the financial and technological frameworks that would underpin the modern utility industry. This report, signed by Edison and his business partners, offers a rare snapshot of the company’s capitalization, asset structure, and liabilities during this formative period in the electrification of America.
