Scarce original program for a “Reception and Banquet” honoring “Col. Charles A. Lindbergh,” as part of his famous ‘Spirit of St. Louis Tour of the United States,’ following his historic transatlantic flight two months earlier on May 20–21, 1927. The program, printed for a ceremony held at the Bektash Temple’s Banquet Hall in Concord, New Hampshire, on July 25, 1927, measures 9.5 x 7.25 open, and is vertically signed on the front cover next to the aviator’s likeness in fountain pen, “C. A. Lindbergh.” Framed to a slightly larger size and in fine condition.
The consignor notes: ‘My grandfather attended a reception and banquet for Col. Lindbergh immediately after his historic flight. This was one of the early stops on the ‘Lindbergh Tour’ around the United States. Lindbergh signed his program, and my grandfather had it framed professionally right away.’
Sponsored by the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics, Lindbergh’s tour of the United States started at Mitchel Field in Long Island, New York, on July 20, 1927, and ended at the same location on October 23, 1927. The excessive time spent flying between many of the cities visited on his tour was caused by requests from other cities whose inhabitants wished to see the Spirit of St. Louis circle overhead. Also, extra time was usually allowed for the possibility of encountering headwinds and having to detour through weather areas en route. On several occasions, long ‘exploration’ detours were made over interesting portions of the country. The tour consumed 260 hours and 45 minutes of flying time, and covered about 22,000 miles. Of the eighty-two made stops, the Spirit of St. Louis arrived late only once (at Portland, Maine, because of fog).
