Hungarian statesman (1802–1894) who played a leading role in bringing parliamentary government to that country. After abdicating his briefly held post as regent-president in the turmoil that followed the ascension of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1848, the fugitive leader made a successful tour of Britain and the United States. ALS signed “Kossuth,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, April 19, 1859. Handwritten letter to Charles Gilpin, in part: “Amidst the gloom of affliction which is overhanging your domestic happiness – an affliction in which I share with a brother’s heartfelt sympathy – I feel it is bordering on indiscretion to intrude upon you – but the welfare of a worthy man obliges me to become guilty of that indiscretion – I therefore rely upon your kindness to hold me excused. Some time ago I made bold to solicit your patronage in behalf of a French gentleman Mr. Delpech, who at that time was a competitor for the teachership of French language at the City of London school. He was not successful then. Now an opening offers itself to him at the London University School by the promotion of Mr. Savoye (late Professor of French & my particular friend) to the post of Governm’t examiner at Woolich. It is Mr. Savoye himself who recommends Mr. Delpech as the most fit or best deserving to fill the place which he vacates.” In fine condition.
