Description

"I drafted the program for a new universal institute for creative work under the leadership of architecture and named the new institute the 'Bauhaus'"

Highly influential German architect (1883-1969) who founded and designed the Bauhaus and whose other important buildings include the Harvard Graduate Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Pan Am Building in New York City. TLS in German, signed in pencil, “Gropius,” one page, 7 x 9.75, personal letterhead, March 7, 1931. Letter to Josef Strasser in Vienna, in part (translated): "Decisive for my life's work was my decision to take over the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Applied Arts in 1919. When the call came, I was in a state of emotional emptiness due to the upheaval of personal and wartime experiences. The suppression of all intellectual work during the war, the distance from my own systematically and gradually developed work before the war, suddenly reawakened my creative energies when the new opportunity arose. In just a few days and nights, working almost without interruption and without the support of others, I drafted the program for a new universal institute for creative work under the leadership of architecture and named the new institute the 'Bauhaus.' This program was sufficiently broad and adaptable for later practical implementation and, in its fundamental structure, withstood all subsequent challenges." In fine condition.
