Description

Japanese painter and printmaker (1886–1968) whose work combined Japanese techniques with Western style. ALS in French, signed “Foujita,” three pages, 8 x 5.75, May 11, 1948. Handwritten letter to Georges Grosjean, expressing his relief to know that his friend is traveling in South Africa, as he had not heard from him (translated): "Thank God… my joy is so immense." Foujita writes: "You are amazing! What a great man you are!" [Grosjean highlighted this line in blue pencil and added: "That's not true!"]. He thanks him for always thinking of him, and observes that the economic situation seems to be improving: America is beginning to reopen its borders to Japan; even some silk brokers have left for Paris and Lyon. He suggests going to see the Prime Minister in person, Mr. Ashida, whom he knows very well. He writes: "I'm not part of the shut-out class. I'm simply a victim of jealousy and deceit." In fine condition, with some rusty paperclip stains and a trimmed edge to the last page.
