Description

Highly influential French composer (1875-1937) who remains unsurpassed in his imaginative use of instrumental color in his operas, brilliantly scored orchestral music, and virtuosic piano pieces. AMQS on an off-white 10.5 x 3.75 sheet, signed and inscribed in ink, "A Monsieur A. Sklarevski, Maurice Ravel, Le Belvédère, 12/21." Ravel pens several piano bars from his piano work 'Le Tombeau de Couperin [The Tomb of Couperin],' signing at the conclusion. In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, and old mounting remnants on the back.

Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite for solo piano in six movements composed by Maurice Ravel between 1914 and 1917, modeled on the dances of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of Ravel’s who died fighting in World War I, and the work as a whole pays homage to French Baroque music pioneered by François Couperin.
