Description

French painter (1910–1964) who described his style as 'modern rustic' and enjoyed the company of the artistic and intellectual elite of his day. ALS in French, one page both sides, 6 x 9, January 3, 1958. Handwritten letter to J. P. Foucher in Nantes, penned in the margins of an article cut from an art magazine, "An Up-and-Coming Artist: Maurice Lefaux by R. Schnir." In part (translated): "I don't understand your way of understanding. I didn't write to you but sent you some texts for your exhibition, and you reply as if I hadn't sent them. If these texts don't suit you, so be it, and I have no intention of sending you anything else besides paintings. Furthermore, you seem to want to come and see me. Please excuse me, but I'm depressed, on edge, and the visitors tire me out, irritate me, and sometimes even provoke real nervous breakdowns. I'm practically on the brink of persecution complex and don't have much to do about it. All that remains is to give you the first taste of my poetic creation from today, January 3, 1958:

The Ball of the Nuns - The Ball of the Chocolate Conscripts - It's good for the guys who are working hard - Sauerkraut and cervelat sausage - The desperate people who shout - Who's he, Mr. our king? - They very softly laugh at the survivors of Charleroi. - But Sidonie the farmer In her beautiful paradise - Kindly serves us beer - With a good plate of radishes - Perfectly raw for happiness - With the help of the bright sun - Which winks at the nun - With a more than tempting air." In fine condition, with some trivial edge loss.
