ALS in Italian, one page, 5.75 x 7.75, November 5, 1956. Handwritten letter concerning the lending practices of Italian museums to foreign institutions. In part (translated): "I find it completely absurd and useless to send works from Italian museums to America, works which, in addition to their artistic value, have historical value. It is also absurd to talk about 'special packaging' and 'Commissions' that must decide whether these paintings can travel. If the ship or plane carrying them sinks or burns, there is no packaging or commission that can save them. We must not forget that the number of Americans, even of modest means, who come to Italy every year is enormous, and is constantly increasing. And then the citizens of the United States are not neighbors with the savages of Matogrosso; they live in cities now, where they find museums full of masterpieces from every country and every era. Therefore, I repeat, it is absurd to want to send works from our museums to America." In fine condition.
