Description

ALS in French, signed “F. Liszt,” one page, 6.75 x 8.5, no date but circa 1850. Handwritten letter to the mayor of Cologne, regretting that commitments keeping him in Weimar prevent him from traveling to Cologne to attend an anniversary celebration. In part (translated): "Worthy in every respect, by his rare qualities of character and talent, as well as by the very real and meritorious services he has rendered to your city, of such a demonstration by which your fellow citizens honor themselves….I am sincerely obliged, my dear Mr. Eisen, for the information you have given me concerning the celebration being prepared in Cologne to honor the twenty-fifth anniversary of Mr. Ernst [Meyden?] taking office. Mr. Meyden is certainly worthy in every respect, by his rare qualities of character and talent, as well as by the very real and meritorious services he has rendered to your city, of such a demonstration by which your fellow citizens honor themselves. While wholeheartedly associating myself with this celebration, I regret that occupations and duties requiring my presence in Weimar prevent me from going to Cologne to personally take part in it. However, I will not fail to remind Meyden directly of my presence on this occasion. Please accept the assurance of my sincere feelings of esteem and distinguished consideration." Affixed to a larger mount and in fine condition.
