Description

As "Commd'r & Aid de Camp to Major Gen'l Wayne," Harrison orders clothing for troops at Fort Washington

Manuscript DS, signed “Wm. H. Harrison, Commd'r & Aid de Camp to Major Gen'l Wayne,” one page, 7.5 x 6, August 24, 1796. Document headed "Clothing Return for a Detachment of Troops, now at Fort Washington," ordering the issuance of "one hat, two coats, one vest, two pr. woollen overalls, forty two shirts, three sticks & clasps, fifty pairs of shoes, two pairs of socks, and two blankets." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, loss to the lower left corner, and irregular toning from prior display.

William Henry Harrison served as aide-de-camp to General 'Mad' Anthony Wayne from 1793 to 1796, taking part in the Ohio Indian Wars. In 1795, he signed the Treaty of Greenville, which ended the conflict and required a coalition of Native American tribes—including the Ottawa, Potawatomi, Chippewa, Miami, and Shawnee—to cede vast Midwestern lands to the United States in exchange for $20,000 in goods. Nearly two decades later, Harrison rose to national prominence for his victory over Tecumseh at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.
