Description

'To a brave and faithful soldier’—1819 military land grant issued to a veteran by President James Monroe

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13 x 9, February 5, 1819. President Monroe grants William Williams, “late a private in Fallons Company of Riflemen, a certain tract of land containing one hundred and sixty acres…appropriated…for Military Bounties in the Territory of Missouri.” Signed at the conclusion in ink by President James Monroe, and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. The lower left corner retains the original white seal, and the upper left bears a wonderful vignette with a Latin banner, “Militi Forti et Fideli” (‘To a brave and faithful soldier’). In very good to fine condition, with overall soiling.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
