World War II–dated manuscript DS as president, one page, 20.25 x 16.25, August 13, 1942. President Roosevelt appoints Thomas M. Wilson "to act as Minister Resident and Consul General of the United States of America to Iraq." Prominently signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and countersigned by Secretary of State Cordell Hull. The embossed white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. Ornately archivally double-matted and framed to an overall size of 31 x 27. In fine condition.
Thomas Murray Wilson (1881–1967) was an American diplomat who entered the Foreign Service after an early career in business. By this appointment, he was made United States Minister Resident and Consul General to Iraq, serving there until his retirement in 1944. During this time, the United States was negotiating with Iraq over its involvement in World War II and about oil interests in the region.
