John Charles Philip DeKrafft (1828–1885) was a U.S. Navy officer whose career spanned more than four decades, from the early years of the Naval Academy through the post–Civil War era. Born in Washington, D.C., he graduated with the Academy’s second class and rose steadily through the ranks, serving worldwide in the Mediterranean, Pacific, and Atlantic. During the Civil War he commanded USS Conemaugh, participating in key operations along the Gulf Coast and helping secure Fort Powell in 1864. After the war, he held important squadron, command, and shore assignments, including service as Hydrographer of the Navy and President of the Board of Inspection. Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1885, he died later that year in Washington, D.C., and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
