ALS signed “Ron,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 4.25, personal 'presidential seal' stationery letterhead, January 19, 1991. Handwritten letter to columnist Betty Beale Graeber, in full: “Thank you for your warm letter and for the news clipping of Marty Anderson's letter to the editor. With friends like you, and yes, Marty, I can shed the press barbs without losing any blood. You were kind to write as you did, and I'm truly grateful, but I'm also sorry about the March visit. I'm only scheduled for half a day and then back to Calif. same day. Nancy & I would love to see you, but I'm afraid this trip isn't the one for such a pleasant get-together. I'll watch for a better occasion. Nancy sends her best. So do I.” In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope, which bears Reagan's pre-printed franking signature.
Betty Beale (1908–2006) was a prominent Washington society columnist for the Washington Star whose syndicated column chronicled the capital’s political and social elite from the Truman through Reagan administrations. Known for her warm, discreet style, she attended thousands of diplomatic and social events and described her work as documenting ‘the manners, customs and personalities of our times.’ At the height of her popularity in the 1960s, her column appeared in about 90 newspapers nationwide.
