TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, "Aboard Air Force One" letterhead, November 21, 1985. Letter to James S. Rosebush, Deputy Assistant to the President, in part: "Now that our mission to the Geneva Summit is successfully concluded, I wanted to express my personal thanks for your extraordinary contribution. We did indeed travel to Geneva with peace as our goal and freedom as our guide. For there can be no greater good than the quest for peace, and no finer purpose than the preservation of freedom. Our meeting marked a fresh start in our relations with the Soviet Union.
Your special effort and the exceptional cooperation of the entire team helped ensure the best possible outcome. In a real sense, preparations for this Summit began not months ago, but five years ago when our team began strengthening our economy, restoring our national will, and rebuilding our defenses and alliances. Much remains to be done, but you can be truly proud of the role you played in the progress we made at Geneva." In very fine condition.
The Geneva Summit was a landmark meeting held in November 1985 between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, marking the first face-to-face encounter between leaders of the two superpowers during the Cold War. Although no formal arms control agreements were signed, the summit helped ease decades of tension by establishing a personal rapport between the two leaders and opening sustained dialogue on nuclear weapons, human rights, and global security. It set the tone for future negotiations and is widely seen as an important step toward the eventual de-escalation of the Cold War.
