American musician (1909–1959) acclaimed as one of the greatest tenor sax and clarinet players in the history of jazz. Two items: a concert program for the Birdland All Stars Tour at the Stadhalle in Freiburg, Germany, on November 12, 1956, signed on the front cover in ink by Lester Young, Bud Powell, the German big band leader Kurt Edelhagen, and the saxophonist Franz von Klenck and additionally signed inside by all four members of the Modern Jazz Quartet (John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Conny Kay), two of the three members of the René Urtreger Trio (René Urtreger and Christian Garros), and the German music journalist Joachim-Ernst Berendt, whose 'Jazz Book,' first published in 1952, became a definitive work on jazz; and a vintage glossy 8 x 10 publicity photo of Young posing with his tenor saxophone, signed in blue ballpoint, "Lester Young.". In very good to fine condition, with emulsion loss and border damage to the signed photo, and a fold and toning to the program. Accompanied by a small candid photograph of Lester Young with a chic female companion at the entrance to the Hotel Claridge in Paris, circa 1940s.
