Description

Infamous financier Jay Gould sizes up the 1880s railroad industry: "They should stay on their own side of the river...if they come into your & our territory we should rethink & build our own lines to Chicago"

Financier (1836–1892) known for his stock market manipulation of railroad securities; he also tried to corner the gold market, leading to the 'Black Friday' stock market crash of September 1869. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal Lyndehurst letterhead, August 10, 1880. Handwritten letter to T. Jefferson Coolidge, a leading Boston businessman and the great-grandson of President Thomas Jefferson, reporting on consolidation and expansion in the railroad industry. Gould refers to some of the most notable railroads and railroad executives of the era, including Sidney Dillon (Union Pacific Railroad) and Charles Elliott Perkins (Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad).

In part: "I quite agree with you as to the policy of the A.T.S.F. & U.P. in reference to eastern lines. We should treat them all fairly & they should stay on their own side of the river. I think this the true intent of the eastern lines otherwise if they come into your & our territory we should rethink & build our own lines to Chicago…Quite recently Mr. Dillon & myself met Mr. Perkins of the C.B&Q. & in a friendly spirit arranged all our matters west of Mo. river. East of Mo. river the C.B&Q. had…Han. & St. Jo. Rd & the Wabash…on my advice made what I considered a perfectly fair adjustment. At the time these negotiations were going on I explained to Mr. Perkins that I was not likely to have so much influence with the Wabash Co. for the reason that I had sold my stock in that company…I have advised the Wabash Co. to make a strong alliance with the C.B&Q. at Peoria or Burlington such as Mr. Perkins intimated would be satisfactory. The Wabash people say in reply that they are committed as part of their purchase of Toledo Peoria & Warsaw Rd to include…a connection with their St. Louis & Omaha…they are willing to go no farther than this point of connection thus protecting the C.B&Q….This is as far as I have been able to commit the Wabash Co. up to this time." In very good to fine condition, with slightly irregular light discoloration.
