TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, August 5, 1936. Letter to Ernest F. Gates, in part: "Thank you much for your letter about my good friend, Billy McDonald. He was a fine person and we shall miss him. Several years ago he gave me one of the envelopes from Tristan da Cunha with the postmark but no stamp. I imagine these letters are quite rare, as there is no regular boat." In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope. Roosevelt was known far and wide as an avid stamp collector, making this an especially interesting letter.
