"This was neither sought nor deserved by myself"—Buchanan comments on his win in the 1856 presidential election

Partial ALS signed “Very respectfully, your friend, James Buchanan,” one page both sides, 6.75 x 3.25, November 27, 1856. Partial handwritten letter, expressing his duty to fulfill the role of the presidency in the aftermath of the 1856 election. In part: "I have perused your very kind letter of the 21st Instant…to perform the task assigned to me by my countrymen. This was neither sought nor deserved by myself." In fine condition, with trimmed edges and scattered faint staining.
