ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 6.75, Hotel Traymore letterhead, January 26, 1918. Handwritten letter to Mrs. Ludwig Lewisohn, in part: "In regard to 'The Last Straw'…it appealed to me as a natural and forceful piece of realism…the only fault I found with it was that the certainty of a tragic end was a little too obvious shortly after the start but I couldn't see how it was to be avoided either. A cold, no coal, and other ills finally drove me down here for a change. Atlantic City is the best and cheapest doctor in the long run—that I know." In very good to fine condition, with splitting the central horizontal fold. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Dreiser's own hand.
