Actor (1853-1937) best remembered today for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage and in a 1916 silent film; his portrayal of Holmes helped create the modern image of the detective. Vintage matte-finish 4.75 x 7.25 cabinet-style portrait by Sarony of New York, boldly signed on the mount in ink, "William Gillette, 1911." In very good to fine condition, with silvering to the darker areas of the image, and a scuffed area to its lower right corner.
