Partly-printed DS in German, signed “A. Jodl,” one page, 7.75 x 12.5, November 14, 1945. Document headed (translated), "The International Military Tribunal, Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness," made while preparing his defense for the Nuremberg trials. Jodl and his defense lawyer, Franz Exner, request testimony from Lt. Col. Waizenegger, "presumably in an American POW camp," who had knowledge "on my relation to the Fuehrer; on the impression one was forced to get from Himmler's speeches about concentration camps and ghettos," as part of his defense to "relieve me from the blame of co-responsibility for these conditions." Affixed to a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition; another witness summons, accomplished in pencil in an unknown hand, is affixed on the reverse. Accompanied by a contemporary English translation.
At the Nuremberg Trials, General Alfred Jodl, Chief of the Operations Staff of the Wehrmacht High Command, was charged with planning and waging wars of aggression and with war crimes and crimes against humanity. As one of Hitler’s closest military advisors, Jodl had signed key orders authorizing the invasion of multiple countries and the harsh treatment of civilians and prisoners. During his defense, he claimed that he had merely followed orders and acted as a soldier bound by duty, without political authority or freedom to dissent. The international tribunal rejected this argument, holding him responsible for the criminal conduct of the German war machine. Jodl was convicted on all counts and executed by hanging on October 16, 1946.
