Description

Californian pioneer (1803–1880) known for his association with the Gold Rush as the owner of Sutter's Mill, where gold was first discovered by James W. Marshall. ANS signed “J. A. Sutter,” one page, 5 x 3, August 9, 1876. Handwritten note to Francis D. Clark of New York, in full: "On the last 1st of March I was Seventy Three Years old." Addressed on the opposite side in Sutter's own hand. In fine condition, with light soiling, and a small block of toning touching the signature.
