Description

Author, explorer, and special correspondent for the New York Herald (1841–1904), most famous for his inquiry, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?,’ upon finding David Livingstone, a fellow explorer who had become lost in the wilds of Africa. Purple ink signature, "Stanley Pool, March 22d 83, Henry M. Stanley,” on an off-white 3.75 x 2.25 card. In fine condition.

Pool Malebo, formerly Stanley Pool, a lake-like widening in the lower reaches of the Congo River, was originally named in honor the British explorer and journalist Sir Henry Morton Stanley, who mapped the area.
